William Douglas (USA) Mary, 2019

Mary is a photograph made in Père Lachaise Cemetery of a stained glass window. Mary’s missing face simultaneously reveals itself as a window and an image. The stained glass also serves as a projection of the outside world into the tomb where the photograph was captured. The fragmented paneling creates gaps throughout the icon and reminds the viewer of the contentious history of image making with in belief systems.

I am always a little blocked when I have contact with any religious imagery.
This immediately creates on my mind a gap.
Very interesting approach. I like these images.
