Marielle van den Berg is a visual artist working with different media, including painting, textile, sculpture and installations. During her residency at SPAR, she developed the project “Picturing Poverty”, aiming to create connections between the imagery from St. Petersburg museums and its daily urban life through photographs, drawings and found objects. Her new series of paintings shows local beggars in juxtaposition to recognisable decorative motifs of the Hermitage. This series of paintings aims to draw attention to social problems and the increasing gap between the poor and the rich.

The scans below are from the publication in 2019 of the IAPMA (Association Paper Makers and Artists) about the paper work, that is now in the Art Centre building and which I made during the residency of 2017: Ark of Pushkinskaya-10. It was made with a poem of Sergei Kowalski as an inspiration.

During the celebration of the so many years Art Centre P-10 Sergeij Kowalski red his poem Weltkugel and the Ark (top part of the work) was carried into the festive area by Anastasia, Sergeij and another founder and the Rock Museum guy. Later I made the boat. The old rope was dug up at the beach near Repin’s house.

„Puschkinskaja 10 – Parallel-Kugel“

Von Epoche zu Epoche
die Ufer der Marquis-Lacke entlang
vom Kronstädter FootStock
der das Maß des Glücks einer Heimkehr markiert
bis zur Newa-Mündung und weiter hinauf
heimlich an den Bastionen der Festung vorbei
unter dem wachsamen Blick von Peter-und-Paul
so schwammen wir gegen die Strömung
aus dem 20. ins 21. Jahrhundert
auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Welt
in die unsere Arche zurückkehren sollte
aufgrund von Nostradamus.
Wir fanden sie dort, wo der Metrotunnel
in die Ligowka mündet –
vielfältige Erben der Andersdenker
kehrten wir zurück
aus dem Underground zum Richtplatz
und der Bronzegott des Wortes
Nachkomme äthiopischer Krieger und
russischer Faulheit trug uns auf –
den Tempel der Kunst auf den Ruinen
dieser Epoche zu bauen
allmählich gab der Stein uralter Mauern Wärme ab
und die Musik der Freiheit erklang.
Auf dem Dach der Petersburger Arche
wurde die Trikolore
von Vergangenheit Gegenwart und Zukunft
in den Kosmos gepflanzt
– die verirrt torkelnde Weltkugel zusammengebunden
von einer unendlichen Anzahl
sich überschneidender Horizonte
jeder verläuft über dem Haus „Puschkinskaja 10“
und jeder öffnet eine Parallel-Welt
an der wir weiterwirken
um das Leben am Leben zu halten

Mariёlle van den Bergh is a Netherlands-based visual artist working in a variety of mediums to create installations and sculpture. She has worked in the Textile Museum in Tilburg as well as the European Ceramic Work Center in Oisterwijk. In her art, she often draws symbolism from her natural materials, reworking their original connotations. In 2017 she was part of a joint artist residency at SPAR in St. Petersburg. She currently lives and works in the Netherlands.
