BREAKING OUT OF QUARANTINE, Cynthia Fusillo

It seems the world is slowly opening up. I am ready to break out. Here in Barcelona the stores are opening and there are more people in the streets(with masks). Spring is exploding everywhere and it feels as if there is a new sense of freedom.

I am not a performance artist but then there are moments when it seems necessary. These photos are from a few years ago but they seemed appropriate for the theme of breaking out. I covered myself with plastic before applying the plaster and it was a suffocating feeling….unbearable. Similar to how I started to feel in lockdown..The last image is a final photo of the figure.

Dear Cynthia, warmest congrats on the opening up!

The final image is stunning, how is it even possible? How did you do eyes and nose, and ears and mouth?

      Liza! thank you
For this figure I had an assistant(very rare)
it took a few days..we did body parts separately and then I connected it all. I did have to cover my face with plastic wrap which was quite uncomfortable..I felt as if I was suffocating..but I knew what I wanted in the end so I persevered!

    Cynthia,

Wow! I adore how you engage with your body. Amazing work.

A lot of people say isolation will serve to bring us together, to feel more common.

I am happy to hear you are ready to break out of quarantine.
    Neither do I, unfortunately.

Oh Cynthia, such a beautiful idea!
I have to think about Frida Khalo, I don’t know why, I suppose it is the feminity you are transmitting, with a powerful internal source.
I specially like how you exhibited it at the end. It looks so timeless and at the same time like if it arrives, crossing an ocean of time.
    Very very Good!!
