Calice – Climatic installation – Scenocosme : Grégory Lasserre / Anaïs met den Ancxt
Since the beggining of the residency in may 2021 we are working on an new artwork installation for public space.
Calice is the name of this new project.
Calice is a climatic installation, interactive to the sun with sound.
Description of the artwork
«Calice» is a climatic and sound interactive artwork. It reacts to the sunlight.
«Calice» is made of large structures. Their membranes bring together mineral/vegetable/animal characteristics.
This artwork is sonorous and resonates according to the sun rays
It reflects it environment by interpreting the sun’s energy and its variations of intensity.
This installation suggests to create a dialogue and a sensitive symbolic link between plant, animal and mineral..
Francis Ponge writes this about Plants life in «L’Opinion changée quant aux fleurs,» Plants are living crystals, feeding, breathing, suffering, enjoying, dying; and most often reproduce in the same way as animals (sexuation, male and female principles, fertilization, germination) […]. what touches us in the plant, would it not be the perfect and abstract character (coming from the proximity to the crystal) conferred on the qualities of the living?
«Calice» manifests a meeting point between these 3 states with his shape as his sound interaction.
The membrane of the work is flexible and robust. It is inspired by the morphogenesis that determines the structures of primordial organisms: zooplankton, phytoplankton and terrestrial plants that find some of their energy from the sunlight.
The wired structure which covers it follows the process of a Fibonacci suite: a mathematical expression linked to the golden ratio and which is also found repeatedly in the structuring of several living elements.
«Calice» is an element that protects a heart itself. It is made of a flexible and translucent crystal that reacts to the sunlight with sound resonances.
Vibrant, this crystal is the sensitive organ of the «Calice»
According to the position of the sun and the weather, the sunlight illuminates and activates the resonators. The singular chimes of «Calice» are also punctuated by instant of silence at the passage of clouds. The sounds of the work vary autonomously during the day
The crystal contains several rectangular metal elements. They have different dimensions in order to produce various tones.
It is the interactive device attached and protected inside.
This artistic device is close to our precedent artwork
Résonances cristallines :

On each piece of metal, there is a small autonomous electronic and a solar device which is used as a resonator. It is made of a small solar panel and two tiny motors. When the sun illuminates the translucent crystal, it activates the micro-motors.
Each crystal has the ability to resonate by emitting a different tone.
The level of the sound changes according to the intensity of the sun. The installation is delicate in low cloudy weather and becomes more present by clear blue skies.
The translucent crystal is composed of flexible PVC and tape.
It can resist to bad weather.
The calice is made with soft PVC tubes and nylon ropes.
It is able to resist to the winds, to absorb shocks, to be deformed while then naturally returning to its original shape.
The sound creation
The intimate and organic sounds can evolve slowly with the intensity of the sun. The score played is not written in advance but depends only of the intensity of the sun over the days : the weather and the seasons.
A sign will invite the spectators to go and take the time to listen to the work at different times of the day.
We have already made outdoor climate works. We would like to continue this artistic approach.

The fabrication of the crystal and the «Calice»
The 29/05/2021 we have install our artwork inside the Park of the Castle Bouchet at Fareins in France.
