My method of working with art materials has several stages. In the beginning, I experiment. I use a very unpredictable graphic technique. I combine wax, pastel, ink, watercolour on wet paper. In the process I need to keep an image in my head of what I want, but at the same time let go of control and co-create with the ink. It is their unpredictability, like wildlife, that helps me come up with visual solutions that I could not have created in a rational way.
But there is a downside. A very large percentage of my work is going in the rubbish. The photo is only 1/4th of what I’ve done. And of those, only 7 sheets will be left in the end.
