The loneliness of trees in the city (search)

Our project consists of two parts: photos and graphics. The task of graphics is to combine single trees, because they are somehow interconnected anyway. And the graphics, the lower part of the installation, were supposed to symbolize the soil on which the trees grow. Oksana Bronevitskaya is responsible for this part.

There were several ideas on how to implement this. The first is to draw roots among the pipes, add a cultural layer of different objects, because trees grow through our world. Or, to bind the soil layers and pass threads through them, like roots. But we decided that in this case we would shift the focus of attention: photos of trees and their lives are important to us, not the human world.

Anastasia suggested using silk rather than paper. And I tried to draw ink on the fabric. There were several options, but none of them really fit with cyanotype.

But one day I thought: cyanotype can also be used on fabric. I took the threads and ribbons, and made an imprint on the silk.

And I think that’s exactly what you need. Such an imprint will combine all the photos, will not attract attention, and there is something alive in it, like an X-ray of veins and arteries. After all, the root system is also the “circulatory” system of trees.
